Support for PG Students During the Pandemic

7 March 2022

Message from Professor Charles Ng, Dean of HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School

Dear students,

We hope this message finds you safe and well.

With the number of infected cases soaring record high in HK, the fifth wave of pandemic has struck a blow to many of us, affecting our studies, work and lives in various ways. While this is an immensely challenging time, we are in this together.

The University has switched the classes to on-line mode in Spring term. Some students are far away from your loved ones and without family or community support in Hong Kong. You are however not alone; the University is committed to providing the needed support to you, and our faculty and staff stand ready to work with you on any issues and concerns. While F2F contact is not advisable, it is important that you stay connected with your classmates in WhatsApp or WeChat groups or video calls. You are encouraged to check in with your friends, care and offer mutual support to each other. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to faculty supervisors, Program Directors and administrative staff in your School/Hub/Department/Thrust in times of need.

As the health and safety of students are our utmost priority, we are making sure that support is in place for all students. The following are highlights of the resources available to support your well-being:

  • We have a range of guidance including advice and information on vaccination, testing, and academic arrangements on the COVID-19 Info@HKUST page.

If you need medical advice, you can make an appointment in our clinic 852-23586670. You can also seek advice from HSEO ( on issues relating to COVID-19.
  • With the worsening situation of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, you may feel frustrated or worried. Whether you are in Hong Kong or abroad, if you need support and services in this regard, please call 852-2358 6696 or email
  • A 24-hour helpline 852-8208 2688 has been set up to support exclusively all HKUST students 7 days a week. You can also report the emergency on campus at 852-2358 8999 or 852-2358 6565. Please click here for further information.
  • If you are in financial hardships due to emergency, you may approach the Scholarships and Financial Aid Office ( to apply for University’s supported financial assistance.
  • Further questions can also be directed to the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School (

As we continue to weather the critical times together, we would like to thank all students for demonstrating incredible flexibility, perseverance, and care for others as members of the HKUST family. We hope that we will all come out of the difficult times closer and stronger.

Best wishes,
Charles Ng
