HKUST(Guangzhou) Pilot Scheme Admission, 2021/22
In concert with the preparatory work for establishment of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)) in Nansha, the University has rolled out a HKUST(Guangzhou) Pilot Scheme on the Clear Water Bay (CWB) campus to start enrolling research postgraduate (RPg) students since 2019-20 cohort.
HKUST(GZ) is positioned to offer the same quality and standard of teaching and learning environment as HKUST. In line with the requirements of HKUST, we are recruiting high-performing students from a wide range of nationalities, cultures and backgrounds, and with different interests, perspectives, abilities, and entrepreneurial spirit. HKUST(Guangzhou) Pilot Scheme - Fall 2021/22
Over 250 students joined the 1st and 2nd cohorts of the Pilot Scheme since Fall 2019/20. The University is now inviting applications for the 3rd cohort. To join the 3rd cohort under the Pilot Scheme in Fall 2021/22 as PhD or MPhil students, please check out details below:
- The target intake is 150 students, to be admitted to respective full-time PhD or MPhil programs under the Hubs and Thrust Areas.
- Prospective applicants could choose their interested GZ RPg programs offered by the Thrust Area(s) under the four Hubs which matches their academic background and research interest.
- Given the cross-disciplinary education and research at HKUST(GZ), each student under the Pilot Scheme will be assigned two co-advisors from different disciplines.
- The same set of admission criteria and standard applies to all applicants seeking admission to HKUST programs, including admission under the Pilot Scheme. All applicants are required to fulfill the University Admission Requirements. As Programs are taught in English, the University Admission Requirements include English Language Admission Requirements.
- Official admission offers WILL ONLY BE issued through the University’s online application system and shall be final. Other forms of preliminary offers, if any, are not official and should not be taken as binding. The University will not issue any admission offer through other parties. In case of questions, please write and check with the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School.
- Successful applicants under the Pilot Scheme will be admitted to GZ RPg Programs in Fall 2021/22 with the same student status as all other RPg students on the CWB campus. The amounts of tuition fee and studentship for acadmic year 2021/22 are also the same.
- A guaranteed university accommodation will be offered to Pilot Scheme students. On Clear Water Bay campus, the University offers accommodation to students in the first 2 years of their full-time research postgraduate studies. The University is planning to provide accommodation on campus to all research postgraduate students in the GZ campus during their normative period of study. Arrangements on the new campus will be advised later.
- The Pilot Scheme students are required to move to HKUST(GZ) to continue pursuing their respective programs in September 2022. Individual programs may require students to conduct academic and/or research activities at the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute in Nansha, as early as 2021/22.
- When students have satisfactorily completed a degree program, the University will confer the corresponding HKUST degree.

1. What are the programs offered under HKUST(GZ) Pilot Scheme?
- Please refer to the program list at the Program Catalog.
2. Can I apply for the part-time program?
- No. The University is now inviting the application for full-time PhD or MPhil programs only for HKUST(GZ) Pilot Scheme.
3. I want to apply for the GZ Pilot Scheme. What should I do?
- Please apply online at pg.ust.hk/applynow and follow the similar application procedures as other HKUST programs for 2021/22 Fall Term Admissions.
- Please be reminded to indicate your wish to be considered for admission under the Pilot Scheme by checking the relevant box in the online application.
4. When is the application deadline?
- Please refer to pg.ust.hk/programs for the application deadlines of programs you are interested in.
- The selection is conducted on a rolling basis. The admission and selection schedule of different programs may vary. Please contact the Hub or Thrust Area directly.
- Official admission offers will only be issued through the University’s online application system (OAS) and shall be final. Please login to OAS for the latest admissions updates from time to time.
5. What are the admissions requirements?
- The admission requirements are same as all other applicants seeking admissions to HKUST programs.
- Applicants for HKUST(GZ) Pilot Scheme are required to fulfill the University Admission Requirements, including the English language admission requirements.
6. Do I need to identify co-advisor(s) before submitting the application?
- It is not compulsory for applicants to identify any supervisor(s) at the stage of application.
- Faculty members will get in touch with the shortlisted candidates for further arrangement if they find the application profiles and research proposals matched with their expertise.
- You are advised to look into our faculty’s research areas at pg.ust.hk/faculty and explore if there is a match with your research interest.
7. Can I submit more than one application for programs offered under HKUST(Guangzhou) Pilot Scheme and other HKUST programs?
- Yes. Applicants may submit more than one application. However, we see the advantage of staying focused and getting prepared accordingly.
- You need to submit an application, pay application fee, upload supporting documents and invite referees for each program you apply for.
8. Can I change the program choice after I have submitted the application?
- No. The program choice could not be changed after submission of application. Please submit a new application if you wish to be considered for admission to another program.
9. Will I be provided with any funding?
- Successful candidates will be considered for the Postgraduate Studentship (PGS).
- Please visit pg.ust.hk/funding for details of different scholarship and funding schemes.
10. Will I be provided with University housing?
- A guaranteed university accommodation will be offered to Pilot Scheme students.
- Successful candidates will be provided with on-campus accommodation in Clear Water Bay Campus for their first 2 years of research postgraduate studies. After they move to HKUST(GZ) campus in September 2022, on-campus accommodation will also be provided during the normative period of study.
11. When do I need to move to HKUST(GZ) Campus?
- The Pilot Scheme students are required to move to HKUST(GZ) to continue pursuing their respective programs in September 2022. Individual programs may require students to conduct academic and/or research activities at the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute in Nansha, as early as 2021/22.
12. Will I be conferred an HKUST degree upon completion of the program?
- Upon successful completion of the program, you will be conferred an HKUST degree for the program of study. The degree diploma will be identical to that of other programs at the Clear Water Bay Campus.
