The Function hub consists of four thrust areas: Advanced Materials; Microelectronics; Sustainable Energy and Environment; and Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. All four thrust areas are experimentally based and thus demand a large number of research students. A total of 14 faculty members (6 from HKUST CWB campus plus 8 new recruits) will join the hub in 2020 and we would like to request 4 PhDs and 2 MPhils per joining faculty member in 2020. All new students are expected to spend their first year at the Clear Water Bay campus to complete their course requirements (some of them may complete the courses in Nanshan by using Video/Remote teaching). 42 new research students will move to the Nansha campus in year 2 to continue their research study.
The Advanced Materials Area will carry out innovative and transferrable materials research to complement HKUST (CWB)’s strength in cutting edge fundamental research in materials. Thus at HKUST (GZ) we propose three inter-disciplinary areas and one center of facility:
- Functional Polymeric Materials Area
- Wave and Meta Materials Area
- Biomedical Materials Area.
The vision is to expand our capability ranging from integrating emerging micro- and nano-electronic device technologies into complete and scalable systems that can demonstrate real world impact.
The vision is to be a regional and national hub and global leader in sustainable energy generation, storage, and distribution. The goal of this center is to become a National State Key Laboratory and National Engineering Center.
Aim to become the leading laboratory in China and region in the areas of marine chemical biology which focuses on molecular ecology, marine synthetic biology and marine biogeochemistry since this is not only our strength but also the areas that we can claim leadership in the region.
